The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) allow eligible expats to exchange their foreign license for a Dubai license without undergoing driving lessons or tests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting your Dubai license sorted early means you can drive legally and focus on setting your new life. This blog explains how the exchange process works, from checking whether you qualify to collecting documents, paying fees, and avoiding mistakes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is eligible to exchange a foreign driving license in Dubai? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The eligibility for swapping the foreign license for a Dubai one mainly depends on which country issued the driving license. The RTA maintains a list of approved countries whose licenses can be exchanged directly without additional driving tests. To qualify for direct exchange, you must meet these requirements: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Hold valid driving license from the approved country <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          The RTA classifies countries in two groups. Those whose driving licenses can be exchanged directly and those who cannot. The approved list features nations with driving standards and regulations similar to those of the UAE. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Europe<\/strong> <\/td>Germany, UK, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Turkey, etc.  <\/td><\/tr>
          America<\/strong> <\/td>United States of America, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, etc. <\/td><\/tr>
          Asia-Pacific<\/strong> <\/td>Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, etc. <\/td><\/tr>
          GCC members<\/strong> <\/td>Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar. <\/td><\/tr>
          Africa<\/strong>  <\/td>South Africa <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

          *South Korean citizens can only exchange licenses after becoming residents, not for tourist driving. It is highly recommended to verify the specific list, as it can change.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          What documents are needed to exchange your license in Dubai? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          Having your paperwork prepared before attempting to exchange your license will save you a lot of time. It will also eliminate the need for multiple trips to an RTA centre. You must provide the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. An original, valid, unexpired foreign driving license.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
              \n
            1. Your Emirates ID (UAE’s official identification card).  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                \n
              1. A copy of your passport and a copy of your residential visa page, which must verify your legal residence within Dubai;  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                1. Your eye test certificate that you have obtained from RTA approved optical centre;  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                  1. Two passport-sized colour photographs with a white background;  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                    1. A no objection certificate (NOC), which is necessary if you are on an employment-based visa sponsored by a company;  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                      1. Legal translation of the foreign driver\u2019s license (if it is not in English or Arabic), from an approved translation office. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                        All of these documents must be recent and easy to read; expired licenses and missing translations are the two most common reasons that applications are denied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
